Creating your kitchen can be fun!

The centre of your home. The area where you, your family and guests come together. Kitchen sizes have doubled since the early 20th century and we generally spend more time relaxing, socialising and even working in our kitchens. The room is becoming more and more important.

Kitchens as a whole are becoming more affordable. Even high quality, attractive kitchens. The cupboards, the sinks, the ovens. Everything! Creating your dream kitchen is no longer a facade. You can actually do it! Creating a kitchen with your chosen appliances, colour schemes, features and finishes on your cupboards, drawers and surfaces is no longer a pipe dream. By having your own flavour in your kitchen - hosting, eating and socialising has never been more enjoyable. It’s your opportunity to create the centrepiece of your home completely tailored to your desire! Great! Years ago this wasn’t possible. Now, with the help of the internet and technology development, you can create something bespoke, beautiful AND affordable.

Designing a new kitchen is serious business. This will be one of your most used rooms so you should take this seriously. However, how can life be fun if you are always serious! The possibilities you have now with your new kitchen are endless. Although all these options can seem daunting, THIS is where we can help you at RM Joinery! Your Nottingham kitchen fitter will help you choose colour schemes, materials and features to create your dream kitchen.

So let’s get creative! This is where the fun begins. First you need to design. Plan. Without this stage? Who knows what you will end up with! Planning is the stage to get a good idea of the kind of feel and style you want. Although you might not know every single last detail, you can certainly get a great feel for what will work for you.

Many kitchens are pre-designed but this shouldn’t put you off. The designs were created once by professionals, then replicated throughout Nottingham and other areas in the UK. It’s usually more suitable to go for a pre-designed kitchen and make tweaks according to your own personal situation. Creating a completely bespoke kitchen from top to bottom will be complex and come with a price tag… Although this can certainly be done!

When designing your kitchen, this is what you will be choosing:

Kitchen units. This includes cupboards and work tops. Which material do you want? Your choice of work top is important because these will be used for years and years. If you plan on doing lots of cooking, they will need to be strong to endure the wear and tear. You can choose from hard wood, formica and granite/stone. You can then make tiles and other features in your kitchen match your work surface.

Kitchen appliances. Some are happy with their old appliances. However, it’s these small features that stand out. So if they’re horrible and old - your kitchen will have that feel to it. Conversely, if your appliances are ornate and beautiful - your kitchen will also reflect this. Things to consider are coffee machines, toasters, fridges, freezers, dishwashers, microwave and more.

Kitchen sink. Again - this will depend on the finish you go for and how important it is to switch this. Some like a modern metallic look, some like a more classic look

Accessories. Beyond the fitted part of your kitchen (surfaces, tiles etc.) are your cutlery and crockery. Make sure they match your new kitchen!

The last things to think about are:

Tables kitchens and chairs. Do they suit your new style? Do you want to go for unconventional chairs? How about a butchers block instead of a table? The option are limitless!

Lighting is another option. Again, limitless options. You can have fading lights, coloured lights, all sorts! Do you want lights under your cupboards to achieve different ambients? Or you can just go for standard lighting

Soft furnishings are another final consideration. They can add a really nice homely touch to the room.

Again, just think about the kind of environments you can want to create in your kitchen and how best to achieve that.

The beautiful part of creating your own kitchen is that you can bring your own personality to life through your kitchen just like you can with all your rooms in your house. Not only are your ideas unlimited, but designing your own kitchen been so affordable! So you can really go for it.
